Vasectomy is a permanent male contraception procedure. It consists of cutting the vas deferens, which carry sperm from the testicles, so that they are no longer present in the semen.
It is a highly reliable method that has no effect on erections, ejaculation, or the production of male hormones.
At the Centre Chirurgical de Champel, in Geneva, vasectomies are performed by experienced urologists using the no-scalpel technique, in a discreet and comfortable outpatient setting.
Who is it for?
- Desire for permanent contraception in men
- Family planning considered complete, after careful consideration
- Alternative to female contraception within the couple
Vasectomy is intended for men who have carefully considered permanent contraception.
Before the procedure
Preliminary assessment:
- 01 Information consultation on the permanent nature of the procedure
- 02 Verification of current treatments, especially anticoagulants
- 03 Consent gathering and reflection period
Another form of contraception must be maintained until the effectiveness is confirmed by a follow-up semen analysis.
The procedure
Duration: approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Anesthesia: local. The no-scalpel technique, now preferred, limits discomfort and bleeding and speeds up recovery.
Main steps:
- 01 Locating the vas deferens through the skin of the scrotum
- 02 Access via a minimal entry point (no-scalpel technique)
- 03 Cutting and sealing of both tubes
- 04 No stitches, or very limited stitches
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.
After the procedure
Usual after-effects
- Mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising in the scrotal area for a few days
- Wearing supportive underwear is recommended
- Return to normal activities within a few days
Recommendations
- Avoid physical exertion and sexual intercourse for a few days
- It is essential to undergo the follow-up semen analysis
- Keep in mind the permanent nature of the procedure
Expected outcome: contraceptive effectiveness is only achieved after confirmation of the absence of sperm through a follow-up semen analysis, generally after a few months and a certain number of ejaculations. Another form of contraception must be maintained until confirmation.
Follow-up
A follow-up semen analysis confirms the effectiveness of the vasectomy before stopping any other contraception.
