A hydrocele is a collection of fluid in the sac surrounding the testicle, causing swelling of the scrotum. It is usually painless but can sometimes be bothersome.
Hydrocele repair is the surgical procedure to remove this fluid sac and prevent its recurrence.
At the Centre Chirurgical de Champel in Geneva, hydrocele repair is performed by experienced urologists, on an outpatient basis, under safe and comfortable conditions.
When to operate for a hydrocele?
- Large or unsightly hydrocele
- Heaviness, dragging sensation, or discomfort
- Progressive increase in size
- Persistent hydrocele in adults
The procedure is indicated when the hydrocele becomes bothersome or increases in size.
Before the procedure
Preliminary assessment:
- 01 Clinical examination, supplemented by ultrasound if necessary
- 02 Review of current medications, especially anticoagulants
- 03 Anesthesia consultation and consent form
Procedure details
Duration: approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Anesthesia: general or spinal anesthesia; local anesthesia may be considered in some cases. The choice is made with the anesthetist.
Main steps:
- 01 Small incision in the scrotum
- 02 Drainage of the accumulated fluid
- 03 Treatment of the sac (resection or eversion) to prevent recurrence
- 04 Closure with resorbable stitches
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.
After the procedure
Usual outcome
- Swelling and bruising of the scrotum for 1 to 2 weeks
- Moderate pain managed with painkillers
- Wearing a scrotal support recommended
Recommendations
- Avoid physical exertion for 2 to 3 weeks
- Wear supportive underwear
- Monitor the scar and consult if you develop fever, increasing pain, or significant swelling
Expected result: the fluid sac disappears and the scrotum returns to its normal size, with a low risk of recurrence.
Follow-up
A follow-up appointment to check the scar is scheduled some time after the procedure.
